Synopsis
After years in Moscow, thug Khamro returns to his Tajikistan village to tend to his dying mother Halima. Their reunion is not what he expected at all. His hometown reception ends up being full of surprises. A crooked mayor soon attempts to threaten Khamro into paying back his long overdue debts. The townspeople demand that he recognize his 10-year-old abandoned son. Khamro’s angry neighbors are closing in on him faster than his mother’s pretty nurse…

Press
"Many of the pleasures here are in the details and rituals of everyday life… A sturdily acted film from a region so rarely represented in cinema."
BBC
"In this accomplished second feature, Tajik director Djamshed Usmonov returns to his native village to film a parable about good and evil...Gentle wit... Concisely written dialogue with dry humor."
VARIETY
"Guided by a cleverness that has the good taste not to let itself be known... Usmonov carries on well his note until the end..."
TELERAMA
"Fiction quickly finds a mythologic or religious dimension... Negotiation is one of the big subjects of this surprising film. Scenes in which the villagers negotiate are the alibi for surprising demonstrations of power, as comic as ritualistic, profound and sacred. Directed with calm, rigor and modesty... Intriguing mixture of the sacred and the brutal."
