Synopsis
The testimony of Isabelle Romée, Jeanne’s mother, serves as punctuation for a look at “Saint Joan” the soldier… France, 1429. Deciding she needs to look and fight like a boy, Jeanne cuts her hair and learns to use a sword. All to help her convince the men in power that she is prepared for battle… Rivette chose to avoid all Joan of Arc cliches. He presents the historical figure as a warrior with only her faith for strength.
Press
"Rivette's landscapes are awe-inspiring in a quiet, unassuming way: foggy, slightly hazy, their colors muted rather than garish, but still somehow sumptuous and beautiful. "
Only The Cinema
"As a film, ''Jeanne la Pucelle'' is austere and handsome, propelled by an unadorned but magnetic performance by Sandrine Bonnaire as the doomed heroine and enhanced by music by Jordi Savall, the violist da gamba whose expertise in medieval, Renaissance and Baroque music contributed so much to the authenticity and excellence of ''Tous les Matins du Monde.''
READER
"A good introduction into the early years of Joan of Arc."
