Synopsis
France, 1429. Jeanne has succeeded in lifting the siege on Orleans and Charles VII has been ordained King of France. Jeanne is injured in an assault on Paris, weakening her position in the war. Later, she is taken prisoner at the siege of Compiègne. The beginning of a period of prisons and trials, ultimately leading to her execution… Rivette deliberately focused on Joan of Arc the woman, not the saint, to succeed in his realistic portrait of the historical figure.
Press
"A good introduction into the early years of Joan of Arc."
MUBI
"As a film, Jeanne la Pucelle is austere and handsome, propelled by an unadorned but magnetic performance by Sandrine Bonnaire as the doomed heroine and enhanced by music by Jordi Savall, the violist da gamba whose expertise in medieval, Renaissance and Baroque music contributed so much to the authenticity and excellence of Tous les Matins du Monde.''
READER
"Rivette's landscapes are awe-inspiring in a quiet, unassuming way: foggy, slightly hazy, their colors muted rather than garish, but still somehow sumptuous and beautiful. "
