Synopsis

Synopsis

A fashionable playwright-director offers roles to two young actresses. There, the actresses find themselves influenced by a magician and start to see their future. Soon thereafter, the mysteries, hallucinations and rivalries begin…

Press

"Love On The Ground is the quintessential example of Rivette’s cinematic style. Long graceful shots, moving from one perfectly framed composition to another, give the film a unique profoundness. It is all too easy to see why this film is regarded by some as Jacques Rivette’s greatest film."

LOVE FILM

"The process by which Clement’s theatrical work is molded to fit reality, and vice versa, is rendered in a clever, entertaining style that fits perfectly with the behavior of the participants, since Mr. Rivette displays a cool ingenuity that matches that of the performers. Even when it becomes entangled in the romances that take shape during the course of the week, the film sustains its trickiness and sophistication…The rest of the small cast also performs with intelligence, resourcefulness and full involvement in the material’s peculiar demands."

THE NEW YORK TIMES

"Rivette’s picture deals with the nature and implications of love in both a theatrical and realistic sense….His clear style of direction is felt throughout the picture and the chemistry between Birkin and Chaplin give the picture an added edge with a generally intelligent range of performances from the supporting cast."

EYE FOR FILM

"Precious…meticulously constructed."
