Synopsis
Edward Burtynsky makes large-scale photographs of ‘manufactured landscapes’ – quarries, recycling yards, factories, mines, dams… He makes stunning and beautiful photographs of civilization’s materials and debris, and so raises all kinds of questions about ethics and aesthetics without letting us easily dismiss them. The film follows the steps of Burtynsky as he makes clear through beautiful photos the effects of China’s massive industrial revolution.
Trailer
Press
"A work that is every bit as cogent, innovative and profoundly unsettling as its subject."
TORONTO STAR
"An extraordinarily haunting, beautiful, insightful, touching and thought-provoking movie."
AL GORE IN INDIEWIRE
"A profound, open-ended meditation on man’s physical impact on his environment…”Manufactured Landscapes” serves as a staggering wake-up call, underscoring how far removed Western consumers are from the production of everyday objects. Quite literally “made in China,” it goes a long way to explore the implications of that phrase."
VARIETY
"A highly unusual viewing experience that stimulates the senses and the conscience simultaneously."
