Synopsis

Synopsis

Masuoka is a cameraman possessed by the craving to understand fear. He wanders the streets, a voyeur, hungrily looking for clues. Obsessing over the haunted expressions of the faces he has captured in his daily filming, in particular a man who committed a grisly suicide on the metro. He returns to the scene and finds a door, an entry into a bizarre, cavernous underworld. Here among the ghosts and strange subterranean robots he finds a beautiful young girl chained to a rock. Saving her from her imprisonment, he takes her home, but soon he begins to suspect there is something truly inhuman about this girl with sharp teeth who walks on all fours… From the director of the cult hit Ju-On (The Grudge) and starring cult director Shinya Tsukamoto (Gemini, Tetsuo).

Press

"Marebito is no conventional vampire movie… Made with visual flair."

THE LOS ANGELES TIMES

"Shimizu’s film similarly pools from a variety of material, promising a potentially disarming hybrid of psychological thriller and otherworldly spookiness."

INDIEWIRE

"An interesting trifecta of voyeuristic, modern obsession and alienation."

SLANT

"A disturbing supernatural drama…cleverly structured."

THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER

"A strong change of pace and a shift towards a more provocative direction, this deeply sinister, slow-paced horror tale is a difficult, disturbing film that explores the dark and frightening psychological terrain of obsessive relationships and urban paranoia…this chiller gradually builds to a deeply disturbing and incredibly bizarre climax, delivering a peak of perverse strangeness that’s worthy of a David Lynch film."
