Synopsis
Marjane Satrapi’s critically acclaimed memoir, “Persepolis”, comes to life in this witty and heartfelt animated feature. Persepolis is the poignant story of a young outspoken girl’s coming-of-age in Iran during the Islamic Revolution. When Marjane’s boldness causes her parents to worry over her safety, they decide to send her to school in Austria. Vulnerable and alone in a strange land, she endures the typical ordeals of a teenager. In addition, she has to combat being equated with the religious fundamentalism she fled her country to escape. Over time, she gains acceptance and even experiences love, but after high school finishes, she is alone and horribly homesick. Though it means putting on the veil and living in a tyrannical society, Marjane decides to return to Iran to be close to her family.

Press
"Persepolis boasts a bold lyricism, in both concept and execution, hand drawn toon is a winner."
VARIETY
"A compelling personal story and a salutary political survey."
THE DAILY TELEGRAPH
"This remarkable and unique film is funny, provocative and heartbreaking. Persepolis looks stunning. Co-director Paronnaud, a master of black-and-white animation, has turned Satrapi’s witty; faux-naive drawings into arresting moving image."
BLOOMBERG
"One of the charms of Persepolis , on page and screen, is Satrapi’s vein of irony and self-deprecatory humour. The story is as much about the life of a feisty young woman between the ages of four and 24 as it is about Iran, and in any case it is far from being a eulogy of Western values."
SCREEN INTERNATIONAL
"This rare animated political film witnesses the Iranian Revolution from a highly personal perspective. The filmmakers were right to believe that a live-action version of this story would have failed to achieve the universality Persepolis does. Animation allows any viewer to experience this story not as an exotic tale but as something happening to a person with whom we can readily identify."
