Synopsis

Synopsis

"The Age of Stupid" is a documentary-drama-animation hybrid from director Franny Armstrong (Mclibel, Drowned Out) and Oscar-winning producer John Battsek.

Oscar-nominated Pete Postlethwaite (In The Name of the Father, Brassed Off) stars as a man living alone in the devasted world of 2055, looking back at “archive” footage from today and asking: why didn’t we stop climate change when we had the chance?

Runaway climate change has ravaged the planet by 2055. Pete plays the founder of The Global Archive, a storage facility located in the now melted Arctic, preserving all of humanity's achievements in the hope that the planet might one be habitable again. Or that intelligent life may arrive and make use of all that we've achieved. He pulls together clips of "archive" news and documentary from 1950-2008 to build a message showing what went wrong and why.

Trailer

Stills

Press

"You’d be stupid to miss it…the film makes a pretty damn scary case for us to take climate change very seriously."

NEWS OF THE WORLD

"Anything but a good-guys-versus bad-guys polemic. It is angry but nuanced, despairing but strangely motivating."

THE NEW STATESMAN

"Fantastic. Knocks spots off An Inconvenient Truth."

THE ECOLOGIST

"The first successful dramatisation of climate change to reach the big screen."

THE GUARDIAN

"The out and out winner this year was chosen for the sheer scale of its ambition and the verve of its realization. On every level, The Age of Stupid is a powerful and unforgettable film that leaves you honour bound to force governments to take action and that the judges recommend everybody must see."

THE GRIERSON AWARDS JURY

"Armstrong predicts that her film will bring about a change in public perception of global warning."

NETRIBUTION

"Fascinating. The message, never stated but constantly emerging, is that we all have our self-justifying myths. These myths prevent us from engaging with climate change."

THE GUARDIAN

"This film is a fantastic achievement."

THE ECOLOGIST

"Two, highly-motivated environmentally-minded filmmakers."

CAMERA FOCUS

"An amazing rollercoaster ride of emotion, laughs and a hard-hitting message that we all fail to act now at our peril."

ONECLIMATE.NEt

"The pace is taut and the portraits intimate and playful, with an eye for gem-like moments of absurdity."

NATURE.COM

"A crowd-pleasing film that holds the potential to create public awareness and stir action in support of an ambitious international climate agreement."

COPENHAGEN CLIMATE COUNCIL

"I felt as if I was watching all my own excuses for not doing anything about climate change being stripped away from me. And it’s tender and funny and wise as well. Can I just pretend I never saw it?"

WILLIAM NICHOLSON, Oscar-nominated writer of Gladiator

"A captivating and powerful piece of filmmaking as well as a call to save the planet…manages to blend the factual with the emotional without ever feeling too earnest or didanic….thoughtfully put together and well researched, it’s incredibly interesting as well as being, well, a bit terrifying…"

LITTLE WHITE LIES

"Our mistakes are depicted with painstaking detail, clear and precise, so that there is no room for argument…It works as an incitement to action….No stone is left unturned in tracing the route to our destruction…This is a film capable of challenging the most serene attitudes. By maintaining an even tone as she shows the world burning, Armstrong reflects a mentality that still prevails and probably always will."

DON'T PANIC

"Every single person in the country should be forcibly made to watch this film."

KEN LIVINGSTON

"Journalism is solid, instructive and pleasingly thoughtful, largely avoiding a black-and-white and familiar approach to the subject. Entertaining and provocative."

TIME OUT

"The Age of Stupid is the most imaginative and dramatic assault on the institutional complacency shrouding the issue."

THE TIMES

"Bold, supremely provocative, and hugely important, (Armstrong’s) film is a cry from the heart as much as a roar for necessary change."

THE TELEGRAPH

"It lectures us sternly and pitilessly – yet also intelligently and provokingly….The Age of Stupid presses all the right buttons."
