Synopsis
Year 1966: A pool hall, a beautiful girl and a young soldier have a brief encounter, then struggle to find each other again. Finally they share stolen moments together on a beautiful warm evening.
Year 1911: During the Japanese occupation of Taiwan, a married diplomat wins the admiration of a courtesan through his kindness, but because of his principles he can not take her as his concubine. He sends a letter from Shanghai that conveys his regret at his unfulfilled love.
Present Day: A Time for Youth. Under the threat of warfare with China, Taiwan is unsettled. A young bi-sexual woman becomes involved in a three-way love affair. Hidden passions simmer beneath the misunderstandings, rejections and the modern relationships that flourish or fail from the safe distance of text messages and e-mails.
Trailer
Press
"A fascinating exercise in utilising style to make subtle psychological and political statements."
EMPIRE MAGAZINE
"Hypnotically beautiful…[The director] brings us love and loss in three different time periods."
THE NEW YORK TIMES
"The highest of cinematic art… Don’t miss."
THE GUARDIAN
"This is Hou’s most eloquent expression…it’s also his most directly accessible."
TIME OUT
"Setting a love story in three different eras with the same leads seems gimmicky at first glance, but the concept is a form fit for Hou. The greatest chronicler of our mortality, Hou makes movies that are attuned to the implacability of the past and the impermanence of the present."
