Instead of focusing only on the actual games, much time is spent off the court in interviews with the players and their families. Particular emphasis on Coach Kenny Jones’ attempts to help the troubled star player Ed Smith. Set in the gritty neighborhoods of Brooklyn for a portrait of urban African American life.
