Johnnie To has been one of the most successful and prolific directors in the Hong Kong film industry for the last 15 years with an enormous following both locally and internationally.
Although he has directed extremely popular comedies and romance films his international reputation is mainly built around his more serious works, mostly focusing on the themes on masculinity, power, violence and fate. His most recent films have seen him consistently deliver Hong Kong’s most compelling gangster and crime thrillers. Unafraid to experiment and remould the genre, To’s recent sucess at the Venice, Cannes and Toronto Film Festivals shows him maturing as a director and gaining wider critical and audience acclaim for his gothic crime thrillers, most notably his two Election films generally acknowledged to be Hong Kong’s answer to The Godfather trilogy.
